First-degree murder. Life in prison without the possibility of parole. When my father began serving his life sentence in 2005, my mother began struggling as a single parent living in South Central Los Angeles and providing for five children. I decided to take responsibility because my family needed me. I’ve learned that my current situation doesn’t define where I’m destined to be. My community has inspired me to fight and love myself enough to not settle for less. They inspired me to use my pain and story to show others that there’s some good in the world and it’s up to them to find.
